Artichokes are one of the oldest foods known to man. The Globe Artichoke that we know in the United States originated in the Mediterranean. We usually refer the artichoke as a vegetable, but it is actually a flower bud that we consume before it blooms. If you let the artichoke blossom, it turns a wonderful violet-blue color.
Almost every artichoke that we consume in the States comes from California, and Monterey is considered the “Artichoke Center of the World,” even though Italy produces the most artichokes. In 1947, California crowned the first “Artichoke Queen” to a young actress named Norma Jean Mortenson, who later changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.
Artichokes can be served in many different ways, so enjoy some artichokes today!
